Actaea spicata (Act‑sp.)
Actaea spicata (Act‑sp.) appears in 84 rubrics in the repertory. Of these, 2 are single-remedy rubrics listing only this remedy, and 3 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis lies on Fear, Anxiety, and Starting. The number of specific rubrics is small, the data therefore thin; the picture remains correspondingly outlined and provisional.
Fear and Restlessness
The core lies in the mind, and there in Fear. With 14 rubrics it is the largest main rubric; Anxiety, Starting, and Delirium follow. Fear becomes clearest in the combination of death and position: "Fear, phobia – death, of – lying down, on". The fear of death thus seems not to be permanently present but to arise as soon as the person lies down and comes to rest. Fitting this are the rubrics on Mental exertion and on Delusions, each represented with three entries.
Mood in Small Things
The mood depends on trifles. The repertory records weariness of life accompanied by despair over trifles ("Weariness of life – despair over trifles, with") and an absent-minded manner alternating with confusion. The two single-remedy rubrics concern particulars: "Cursing – eating, after" and "Cheerful, gay – motion, when in". They can be read as pointing to a person whose mood depends on bodily state, irritable after eating, brightened in motion.
Summary
The data yield no more than an outline. What is drawn is a person who has his center of gravity in Fear, fears death when lying down, and whose mood fluctuates between confusion, despair over small things, and bodily conditioned brightening.
All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
