Aloe succotrina (Aloe)

Aloe succotrina (Aloe) appears in the repertory in 352 rubrics. Of these, 29 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 28 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis is on Fear and Anxiety, Thoughts, Activity, mental exertion, Rage, and Dissatisfied. The picture is that of a person whose mood and drive alternate closely, who is easily frightened, and whose mental state seems tied to eating, weather, and stool.

Alternation of activity and exhaustion

The most striking feature is alternation. Mental activity alternates with laziness and with mental exhaustion, desire for activity with exhaustion, desire for mental exertion with weakness, with laziness, and with indifference. A good memory alternates with languor. Laziness sets in on waking and at noon, hurry on work in the afternoon. After meals the thoughts change: after eating they are deliberate and considered, there is self-contemplation and sinking into thought; a rush of thoughts occurs after eating and in ice-cold weather, whereas in wet, cold weather they are especially deliberate.

Dissatisfaction, anger, and rage

The dissatisfaction is directed at oneself and alternates with pain in the lumbar region; the anger at oneself likewise alternates with this pain and occurs with constipation. The person is dissatisfied in rainy weather, morose in cloudy weather, and the mood is bad. The mood is changeable, especially after the midday meal. Rage and fury alternate with unconsciousness and are triggered by attacks of colic or by suffering. There are cursing in the afternoon, constant complaining, and an aversion to visits. Only this remedy has the rubric in which hatred repels everyone.

Fear, fright, and sexual life

The fear is closely tied to the body. Listed are fear and startling from the slightest noises, from rustling, at night, namely after pollutions and after emission of semen. Starting from sleep after nocturnal emission of semen is likewise found only under this remedy. Among the anxieties are fear of fecal incontinence and anxiety from doubt of success. Unconsciousness occurs during stool, excitement during urination.

Stool and hypochondria

As a single-remedy rubric stands hypochondriasis with regard to stool. Fitting this are the anger at oneself with constipation and the fear of fecal incontinence. The body thus directly determines the state of mind.

Delusions

The few delusions are peculiar: that life is a burden, that people tread with their legs or walk loudly, that one sits too high, and that the surroundings whirl around the person. In screaming, the person calls out as if calling someone. A trace of sociability shows in the rubric of fraternizing with the whole world.

Summary

The picture of Aloe succotrina consists of a constant alternation between activity and exhaustion, of a mood tied to eating, weather, and stool, and of a readiness to fear that attaches to noises and to pollutions. The single-remedy rubrics on thoughts after eating and on anger at oneself form the remedy's own core. No king-pin symptom is indicated in the available data.

All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
