Ammonium causticum (Am‑caust.)

Ammonium causticum (Am‑caust.) appears in the repertory in 59 rubrics. There are no single-remedy rubrics and no small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis is on Fear, on Voice and Speech, and in addition on Self-confidence, Mocking, and Restlessness. The entries reveal the picture of an insecure, fearful person with a disturbed voice.

Fear

Fear makes up the largest block and is directed at operations, flying, strangers, open places, crowds, cancer, disease, and failure. Beside it stands groundless, indefinite fear. Part of these fears concerns space and the crowd, another part one's own failure; anxiety about the future follows. Self-confidence is lacking, and there is a wish for "support, attention."

Voice and speech

Voice and speech are specifically affected: the voice is low, weak, deep, hoarse, interrupted, or whispering, the speech indistinct, weak, and thick, up to loss of speech and aphonia. One can see in this a correspondence to the insecurity, although the rubrics themselves do not say so.

Mockery and withdrawal

On the other side stand cynicism, hatred, and biting mockery, but also slowness, dementia, diminished sense of direction, coma, and suicidal disposition. Irresolution and restlessness accompany this picture.

Summary

Fear and insecurity characterize the remedy, the voice fails, and the attitude occasionally tips into mockery or hatred. Since specific rubrics are lacking, the sketch remains general.

All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
