Antimonium crudum (Ant‑c.)

Antimonium crudum (Ant‑c.) appears in the repertory in 675 rubrics. Of these, 43 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 47 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis lies on Children, Anxiety and Fear, Sadness, Voice and Aphonia, Suicidal disposition, and a peculiarly enthusiastic sensitivity. The result is the picture of an oversensitive person who both needs and rejects touch and attention, is plagued by thoughts at night, and becomes soft and enraptured in the moonlight.

Touch and Attention

With 105 rubrics, the child is the largest main rubric, and the dominant theme is touch. The child is morose and weeps as soon as it is touched: "Children, general – morose – weeping when touched". The same defense appears in several versions, as aversion to touch and to caresses in children, and likewise in the rubric in which emotional strain on being touched leads to fainting. At the same time the child desires to be carried, namely in order to be comforted ("Children, general – carried – desires to be – consoled, to be, and"). The wish for closeness and the intolerance of closeness lie side by side. Added are aversion to washing and to water, a child that eats only when asked to, and an aversion to the company of children while the child is being nursed.

Sensitivity and Rapture

A second group concerns emotion. The person becomes sentimental at twilight, before menses, with diarrhea and, as only this remedy, "Sentimental – moonlight, in". He falls into ecstasy when walking in the moonlight, in the morning as at night ("Ecstasy – night – walking in moonlight, when"). Small rubrics add dreaminess with an erotic tinge, exaggerated fancies when walking outdoors, love for an unattainable person, and the desire for the ideal woman and the ideal man. It is an emotional state that is kindled by moods, light, and sound and keeps away from the tangible.

Affection and Rejection

Opposite the enthusiasm stands the feeling of being rejected. Recorded are an attachment one does not want to admit, the sensation of having to do without affection ("Affection, tenderness – do without affection, feeling must"), and hysteria in girls from disappointed love. Oversensitivity to loud noises and to light falling through colored glass fits this.

Night, Anxiety, and Thoughts of Suicide

The night carries its own rubrics. The anxiety sets in between three and five o'clock ("Anxiety – night – 3-5 a.m."), and the suicidal disposition is related to the bed: the thought of suicide, also by shooting, drives the person out of bed because he cannot suppress it. The small rubrics link suicidal disposition with stomach complaints and stomach pain, and despair likewise with stomach complaints. The mind appears here bound to the body, as a burden that the stomach helps to carry.

Voice and Occupation

Aphonia is the main rubric with the most specific entries: it depends on motion, exertion, heating, and the warmth of the room, accompanied by sensitive nostrils but without pain. The voice becomes hoarse from overexertion and improves with use. In action, an absent-mindedness is noticeable that strikes precisely the busy: "Forgetful – everything, forgets – busy, when". Whoever has much to do forgets to eat or to attend to evacuation.

Summary

In the repertory, Antimonium crudum shows a sensitivity that longs for closeness and cannot bear it. The child weeps under the hand that is meant to comfort it; the adult raves in the moonlight and feels without affection, and at night thoughts drive him out of bed. The body, in voice, stomach, and collar, carries the traces of this tension.

All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
