Asarum europaeum (Asar.)

Asarum europaeum (Asar.) appears in 304 rubrics in the Repertorium. Of these, 19 are single rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 15 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis is on Delusions with 28 rubrics, and on Children, Sensitivity, Thoughts and Anxiety. From them results the picture of a person whose mind alternates between euphoria and silence, who is oversensitive to noise and offense and experiences himself as light and floating.

Alternation between cheerfulness and silence

The recurring motif is alternation. Single rubrics record cheerful mood alternating with taciturnity, alternating with aversion to speaking, and euphoria alternating with the desire for rest and quiet. Another single rubric names euphoria with a feeling of lightness as after anesthesia. The excitement thus tips into withdrawal.

Sensitivity and offense

The sensitivity is directed at noise and at offense. Small rubrics name oversensitiveness to loud noises and confusion of mind from noises. Single rubrics record ailments from excessive disappointed ambition, indignation and offense in evening dreams, as well as aggravation from thinking of things to which one is sensitive. A small rubric records heightened ambition.

Body and ground

The Delusions concern support and mobility: parts of the body are immovable, the person does not stand securely, is sinking and must die, floats in the air while walking, the chair rises, someone is scratching on linen. A picture arises of insecurity and suspension of gravity.

Vomiting and clarity

Connections with bodily symptoms appear: vomiting ameliorates the thoughtlessness and lack of ideas, and the dullness is better from vomiting. Small rubrics name cough before anger and cough on rising from sitting. Memory is good for proper names. A further small rubric concerns aversion to sex and kisses.

Anxiety

Recorded as a single rubric is anxiety with wringing of hands, and as a small rubric anxiety about not being able to avoid confrontation, but about impatience in the house.

Summary

Asar. appears as the picture of a sensitive person who oscillates between elevated mood and silence, is agitated by noise and offense, and experiences himself as physically insecure and light. With 34 specific rubrics the data are solid, but the line remains inconsistent.

All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
