Barium muraticum (Bar‑m.)

Barium muraticum (Bar‑m.) appears in 127 rubrics in the Repertory. Of these, 6 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 8 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis lies on Children (19 rubrics in all), Anxiety, Voice, and Delusions. The picture is that of a shy child withdrawn into itself.

The Withdrawn Child

Among the small rubrics stands the child who isolates itself in play: "Children, general – Playing – sits in the corner of the room and plays". To this belong aversion to playing, in which children sit in the corner, and inattention in learning. The children's voice sounds nasal, also with the mouth open. The single-remedy rubrics on the voice link it with fear: it becomes hoarse or weak when fear is involved.

Anxiety and Delusion

The anxiety has a peculiarity of its own. It improves on stooping, and this holds also for the evening: "Anxiety – Stooping, when – amel.". A single-remedy rubric on Restlessness records tossing about in bed during convulsions. Among the Delusions are the idea that the place has changed and that of walking on the knees. Among the small rubrics stands also a mania arising from increased sexual desire.

Summary

The rubrics draw a quiet, anxious child that withdraws, whose voice suffers under fear, and who does not feel quite equal to the surroundings. The data are moderate, the single-remedy rubrics are few and form no closed theme.

All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
