Caladium seguinum (Calad.)
Caladium seguinum (Calad.) appears in 277 rubrics in the Repertory. Of these, 16 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 28 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis lies on Fear, Anxiety, Weeping, Starting, Forgetfulness and Delusions, along with Sexuality. From these emerges the picture of a person with strikingly easily startled senses, whose fear is ignited by everyday sounds and gestures and whose memory returns in sleep.
Noises and Fright
The core lies in sensitivity to sounds. Rustling is central: listed are fear of noises from rustling, starting at the rustling of paper and, for this remedy alone, fear of the rustling of a newspaper ("Fear, phobia - Noise, from - Rustling - Newspaper, of"). Also belonging here is starting when a door is slammed violently. Even in sleep the person remains reachable: awakened by noises, irritable or angry. Even one's own shadow can frighten, as in the single-remedy rubric "Frightened easily - Shadow, of his own."
Shaving
A second, equally delimited theme is shaving. Single-remedy rubrics list anxiety while shaving, fear of cutting oneself while shaving, and fear of being injured while shaving; even shaving as a cause of aggravation of mood stands on its own ("Shaving - agg."). Alongside it stands, as a small rubric, the idea that a barber wants to kill his customer ("Killing, desire to - Barber wants to kill his customer, the"). The blade in another's hand and against one's own skin is thus the point at which the fear condenses.
Tobacco and Forgetfulness
Several single-remedy rubrics lead to tobacco: mental exhaustion from tobacco, restlessness after smoking, forgetfulness from nicotine poisoning and from tobacco poisoning. Memory shows a pattern of its own. What was forgotten comes back to mind in sleep, as the small rubric "Forgetful, forgetfulness - Forgotten things come to mind in sleep" records. This can be read as a memory blocked by irritation during the day and released at night.
Sexuality and Delusions
Sexuality appears in lascivious rubrics concerned with looking at women in the street, and in a jealousy linked with impotence. The desires thus seem lively while capacity lags behind. Among the Delusions are the sensation that the fingers are enlarged, the sensation of being rocked, and the idea that the head falls forward while walking. All three concern the body sense in space and the security of one's position.
Illness and Discomfort
Weeping partly concerns one's own health: listed are weeping in progressive illness and a child's weeping about an illness with senseless prattling ("Weeping - Child, like a - Illness with senseless prattling, over the"). An unusual side feature is the rubrics on discomfort after salted and pickled fish.
Summary
In the Repertory, Caladium seguinum shows a person whom the ordinary throws into terror: the rustling, the slamming, the razor. Behind this stand exhaustion from stimulants, a memory that returns in sleep, and a sexuality in which desire and capacity diverge. The picture gains its sharpness from the single-remedy rubrics on rustling and shaving.
All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
