Calcium phosphoricum (Calc-p.)
Calcium phosphoricum (Calc-p.) appears in 848 rubrics in the Repertory. Of these, 21 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 49 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The main emphasis is on Children, by far the largest area with 213 rubrics, followed by Dullness, Fear, Anxiety, Moaning and Anger. The picture is of a person who has difficulty coping with bad news and whose development and capacity for stress are delicate.
The child in development
The overall finding lies with Children. Listed are late learning to walk with weak legs, rapid growth followed by weakness, a well-developed skull on a weak, sickly body, and chorea in children who have grown too fast. Difficult dentition brings weeping and starting. At the breast there are a persistent desire for mother's milk and, as its counterpart, aversion to the milk, which tastes salty. A schoolgirl at puberty is listed on her own. The child's growth seems to run ahead of its strength.
Fear of being lifted up
The fear has a distinctive feature: it concerns being pulled up or drawn upward and, in children, being lifted from the cradle. It is linked with anxiety in chest complaints. Added to this are fear of chickens and fear of osteoporosis. Watchfulness is striking: the child follows every movement of the doctor. One may recognize a child who mistrusts the ground beneath and the hand above.
Bad news
The most important emotional trigger is unpleasant news. It causes dullness (two single-remedy rubrics and two small rubrics), it makes sad, angry and wild, and it can drive the person beside himself. A further single-remedy rubric lists violence when another is reproached and self-reproach when others are reproached. The remedy seems to turn offense into shock and to react to the criticism of others as to one's own.
Lack of stamina
The single-remedy rubric "Stress – lack of capacity for" strikes the center. Belonging to it are anger that feels paralyzed, anger that cannot work, difficulty learning, confusion from nausea and from the pressure of a hat, and the feeling of falling apart. Enthusiasm is flaming and passes quickly; after coition, busyness and eagerness to work arise.
Restlessness and sighing
Listed are involuntary motions of the hands with screaming and weeping, a desire to wander about the house, desire for change, throwing away toys, complaining and moaning in anxiety, and sighing after grief. Moaning in sleep in children also belongs here. After conflicts there is a wish to talk with someone in order to resolve them.
Summary
In the Repertory, Calcium phosphoricum shows weakness and irritability in close proximity: rapid growth lacking firmness, and a mind that freezes or flares up at grief and bad news. Restlessness and desire for change complete the picture, and the child stands so clearly in the foreground that even the adult rubrics read like traces of childhood features.
All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
