Chloralum hydratum (Chlol.)

Chloralum hydratum (Chlol.) appears in 162 rubrics in the Repertory. Of these, 13 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 11 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis lies on Delusions, Stupor, Despair and Thoughts, plus Children. The picture is that of a nocturnal, feverish state in which consciousness swings between excitement and rigidity.

Delusions of the Night

Delusions are the largest group. They are set at the bed: this remedy alone knows the idea that someone is standing threateningly at the foot of the bed, "Delusions – bed – someone – standing threateningly at foot of bed, someone would be". The person speaks loudly and incoherently to imaginary persons, holds conversations with imaginary people and hurls a bottle at the figures seen. In addition come arches as visions, the delusion of being drunk, and the thought of infecting others with an imaginary syphilis.

Fever and Jumping Out of Bed

Delirium shows itself as movement. Two single-remedy rubrics record jumping out of bed in typhoid, a third lists the fear that drives to it on touch. Screaming goes with this. Alongside are noisy insanity, muttering with restlessness and excitement during labor.

Stupor and Despair

Stillness stands opposed to the uproar. Stupor and despair alternate, as in "Stupor – alternating with – despair", and each also follows the other. The thoughts in this state are uniform and monotonous.

Children

Of the children's rubrics two are small, both concern screaming in nocturnal, panicky fear, also on waking.

Summary

Noise and rigidity, jumping and stupor: the Repertory records a mind to which figures appear in fever and in the dark and which cannot hold itself between uproar and despair.

All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
