Colchicum autumnale (Colch.)
Colchicum autumnale (Colch.) appears in 318 rubrics in the Repertory. Of these, 19 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 13 are small rubrics with no more than two other remedies. The main emphasis lies on delusions with 20 rubrics and sensitivity with 18 rubrics, plus delirium, fear, dullness, and memory. Together they give the picture of a person who cannot tolerate odors, light, and touch, loses the thread of thought through interruption, and flies into a rage over the injustice done by others.
Sensitivity to Stimuli
Sensitivity to stimuli is the core. Single-remedy rubrics name oversensitiveness to the smell of fish, to meat broth, and to bright light. Anger from bright light and anger from odors are listed. Another single-remedy rubric describes wildness from bright light, strong odors, and touch. The senses react excessively and become triggers.
Injustice and Wildness
Moral stimuli also act violently. Small rubrics list sensitivity, indignation, and wildness over the misdeeds of others, as well as rage with discouragement. The mind is as defenseless against the offenses of others as against light.
Interruption and Thinking
As with related remedies, interruption disturbs the flow of thought. Single-remedy rubrics record lack of ideas from any interruption, dullness on interruption, and the impossibility of thinking logically on interruption. Also listed are the inability to write coherently and incoherent writing. Memory has ten rubrics.
Silence and Indifference
The person does not answer, or answers only when asked. Single-remedy rubrics describe indifference when questioned, and that he says nothing about his condition and does not complain unless he is asked. Small rubrics add: answers in questions, does not answer, says nothing. Also belonging here are perception diminished in typhus and acute myelitis, and unconsciousness in an upright posture.
Fear and Night
Listed are the delusion of mice in the bed and the fear of mice on waking, as well as anxiety that returns in the evening, restlessness in the last month of pregnancy, and mania from pain in the evening.
Summary
Colch. appears as the picture of a person whose senses are oversensitive, whose rage flares up at light, odor, and the injustice of others, whose thinking breaks on interruption, and who remains silent and indifferent in illness. With 32 specific rubrics, the data is sound.
All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
