Elaps corallinus (Elaps)

Elaps corallinus (Elaps) appears in 170 rubrics in the Repertory. Of these, 15 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 10 are small rubrics with no more than two other remedies. The emphasis lies on Fear, Company, Delusions and Biting, desire to, as well as on Comprehension. The picture shows a person who wants to withdraw and yet cannot be alone.

Understanding without Speaking

The single-remedy rubrics on Speech form the most striking trait: "Aphasia – no longer understands speech but can speak". Two rubrics on Comprehension are alike in wording, in which the questions asked are not understood, but speaking remains possible. Communication is thus divided within itself.

Biting in Sleep

The desire to bite recurs seven times. Three single-remedy rubrics record that in sleep the person bites into the arm, fingers or hands. The impulse is directed against his own body and occurs where control rests.

Fear, Loneliness and Withdrawal

Company is desired when something terrible seems about to happen; being alone causes fear, especially during menses, and rowdies, so the delusion goes, will break in. At the same time there is the wish to be in a cave, to leave the house on going to bed, and not to be spoken to. The weather also plays a part: damp, cloudy days and rain make anxious. Children want to play in the grass.

Summary

In the Repertory Elaps shows a divided attitude: the need for cave and withdrawal beside the fear of being alone, an understanding separated from speech, and an aggressive impulse that in sleep turns against the self.

All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
