Euphrasia officinalis (Euphr.)

Euphrasia officinalis (Euphr.) appears in 108 rubrics in the Repertory. Of these, 6 are single rubrics in which only this remedy appears, and 5 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphases lie in Speech and Confusion of mind, each most strongly represented with nine rubrics, and in Delusions. The picture is that of a person whose speech falters and whose thinking is confused.

Speech and stuttering

Speech is the defining field. A single rubric describes stuttering that does not occur with individual words: "stuttering – single words, without difficulty". During singing the disturbance is recorded as "Singing agg.". In children the stuttering appears at the beginning of a sentence, namely "Stuttering – beginning of a sentence, only at". The faltering thus sets in at the start of the utterance.

Confusion and delusions

Confusion of mind is recorded in nine rubrics, Delusions in eight. A single rubric states that the person has lost interest in his surroundings. The delusions concern one's own head, which is experienced as large, and include making grimaces, which occurs in the evening and when closing the eyes. Starting, Fright and Restlessness stand alongside as supplements.

Body and sensuality

Bodily and sensual rubrics are few but distinct. A cold bath ameliorates, and children show an aversion to bathing combined with amelioration in cold water. In the sexual sphere, itching of the genitals is recorded in lascivious and lewd states. The weeping occurs when lying down.

Summary

Euphrasia appears in the Repertory as a remedy in which speech, thinking and perception of one's own person falter. Confusion and delusion form the frame, the stuttering the visible expression. The rubrics on body and sensuality complement this picture without altering it.

All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
