Hydrogenium (Hydrog.)

Hydrogenium (Hydrog.) appears in 419 rubrics in the repertory. Of these, 24 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 38 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis lies on delusions, mistakes, irritability, thoughts, elevated mood and singing. Together they yield the picture of a person who swings between a feeling of connection with something higher and being pulled down into the ordinary, and whose rapid thoughts confuse his hand in writing and speaking.

Above and below

The core is a gradient. On one side stand union with a higher consciousness, the feeling of being in the presence of God, overflowing love for humanity, and the view of all people. On the other, the delusion of being pulled downward, with intellect and mind dragged down. A small rubric captures the contrast: "Conflict – higher consciousness and worldly existence, between." Belonging to this are the feeling of being detached and separated, a loss of the sense of time, and the certainty of being strong.

Uncertain boundaries

The self is not firmly outlined. Confusion concerns identity, personal boundaries and sexual identity. The person appears to herself as an old man, takes an old man for a cripple, and believes she frightens others. Philosophizing belongs here too, a brooding over theories, and the thought of corpses, while the energy around them seems to flow in the air.

Flood of thoughts and mistakes

The thoughts outrun the hand. A single-remedy rubric records that mistakes arise in speaking through rapid thinking; for writing, small rubrics name haste, rapid thoughts and transposing words. Concentrating is hard in examinations but easier in the open air. At night the person is in elevated mood and busy; in delirium the thoughts flood in.

Irritability and morning mood

Irritability has its own triggers: the smell of vinegar, exhaustion, the evening at 7:30 p.m., likewise going to bed and the rest afterward. The morning picture is friendlier. The person sings on waking, is contented and confident, though full of aversion to work and mental exertion. Individual features are laughing at the thought of balloons and the desire to move house.

Summary

In the repertory, Hydrogenium shows a person with a longing for dissolution of boundaries and a burden that pulls him back. The rapid thoughts, the irritability and the uncertainty of his own boundaries suggest that access to the higher is not equal to everyday life.
