Kalium iodatum (Kali‑i.)
Kalium iodatum (Kali‑i.) appears in 280 rubrics in the Repertory. Of these, 21 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 16 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis lies on Fear and Children with 20 rubrics each, as well as Anxiety, Starting, Weeping, Delusions and Malicious. From these emerges the picture of a person who becomes hard and insulting toward his family when grief and disappointment weigh on him, and whose hands crush things.
Malice from grief
The most striking pattern is malice. Single-remedy rubrics list it with melancholy and with sadness, a small rubric as a reaction to grief or disappointment, and another for children as irritability and malice from grief or disappointment. The malice is thus not an original attitude but a response to sorrow.
Hardness toward the family
The hardness is directed at those closest. Listed are: "Hard-hearted, unmerciful – family, toward his/her", scolding relatives, and insulting behavior toward family and children. A single-remedy rubric even records the aversion to having children because the world is so bad and the beloved children suddenly become a burden.
Upbringing
Several small rubrics link complaints with domination: ailments from a long history of excessive parental domination and from a harsh, rough upbringing. Here lies a cause of the later hardness, according to the data.
Hands and grasping
The gesturing of the hands stands on its own. Single-remedy rubrics list involuntary grasping that crushes things, crushing of objects, and clenching and curling of the thumb in rheumatism. The inner tension goes into the fist.
Fear and anxiety
Single-remedy rubrics record fear of the return of twilight, of daybreak, and of misfortune with sadness and weeping, as well as weeping in sleep, loud. A small rubric lists the delusion that an accident is impending, another agonizing anxiety from strong emotion.
Summary
Kali‑i. appears as the picture of a person who becomes malicious and hard-hearted under grief and disappointment, above all toward family and children, and whose roots lie in harsh parental domination. Fear of twilight and daybreak and the crushing of things belong to it. With 37 specific rubrics the data are broad.
All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
