Lac humanum (Lac‑h.)

Lac humanum (Lac‑h.) appears in 384 rubrics in the Repertory. Of these, 30 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 20 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis lies on Delusions, Restlessness, Watchfulness, Haste, Concentration and Confidence; in total number, Fear and Delusions lead. The picture is that of a person who does not perceive herself, is oppressed by fear, and lives with the feeling of being ignored.

Self and body

The view of oneself is disturbed. The single-remedy rubric "Delusions – body – ugly, the body would look – fat, is too" gives the idea that the body is too fat; alongside it stands a distorted image of the face. The person is distanced from her ego, does not perceive her own needs and cannot dress herself. Confidence is lacking during the day and improves in the evening, and self-observation makes the condition worse.

Fear and violence

The fear is directed first at life itself: the single-remedy rubric "Fear, phobia – life, of accepting" expresses that the person cannot accept life. In addition there are the fear of disturbing someone and anxiety in connection with food. Alongside this fear are violent thoughts and delusions of violence. The impulses are concrete: to light matches, to stab a teacher. One single-remedy rubric even records that the person would rather be killed than be left alone.

Mother and grief

The rubrics concerning the mother are striking. Irritability toward the mother and sadness at the thought of her stand alone, as do ailments from the death of the mother or of the parents. The feeling of being ignored completes the picture. Respect for the teacher appears as a rubric of its own, and with the children's songs the person sings, childhood remains present.

Restlessness and wakefulness

The person is awake and hurried on waking, in the morning and in the evening, quick in action. Restlessness compels her to do something and improves when she is alone. Concentration is lacking, reading goes unanswered, creativity is lost. The will quarrels with itself over work and rest; the desire for mental exertion alternates with laziness. Escape into a dream world is also recorded.

Colors and weeping

The desire for colors, especially black, is a small rubric. Weeping has fixed times, two and five in the afternoon. The person is reserved about eating.

Summary

Lac humanum appears as a remedy of self-estrangement. The person perceives her body in a distorted way, overhears her own needs, fears life and withdraws, while violence and restlessness grow beneath the surface. The mother and childhood remain the point of reference.

All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
