Magnesium carbonicum (Mag-c.)
Magnesium carbonicum (Mag-c.) appears in 648 rubrics in the repertory. Of these, 24 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 37 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis lies on Anxiety and Fear, Starting, Confusion of mind and Weeping, followed by Children, Bed and Nakedness. Together they yield the picture of a person who experienced much discord as a child, is hounded by fear during the day and finds rest in bed.
The bed as refuge
The point of orientation is the bed. The fear that something will happen improves in the evening in bed, as does the fear of accidents after going to bed and the fear of misfortune, in bed, while the rubrics at the same time list improvement from warmth of the bed. Anxiety eases in the evening in bed, and anguish improves after going to bed. The rubrics portray a fear that grows throughout the day and comes to rest only in the warmth of the bed. A single-remedy rubric, by contrast, records the fear of catching cold at night in bed, another the anxiety in the warm bed when the limbs are cold, as soon as they are uncovered. Warmth and exposure are thus linked with safety and danger; the desire to be naked in bed belongs in this context.
Warmth, eating and anxiety
Warm food is listed specifically: anxiety from warm food, anxiety while eating warm food, anxiety with trembling after warm food, each as single-remedy rubrics. Anxiety after soup stands beside them as a small rubric. Eating thus triggers anxieties of its own, while in Confusion of mind breakfast improves. After milk, the mood becomes repellent, rejecting.
Childhood and family
With 63 rubrics, the Children rubric is the largest. The file names one of its roots: ailments from discord and disunity between one's own parents. A feeling of always being alone is added, and self-sufficiency, needing no help from others. This can be read as an early adaptation to a parental home in which support was uncertain.
Fright, stammering, confusion
Starting occurs lying on the side and lying on the back, in sleep toward midnight, and from itching and biting. Speech breaks off suddenly, talk falters, and confusion increases with noises and from ringing in the ears. All of this shows a perception that is quickly overloaded.
Miscellaneous
Two small rubrics on deeds stand out: gambling, in which money is staked, and stealing sweets. Weeping is at midnight, in sleep with toothache as whimpering. Social events aggravate.
Summary
Magnesium carbonicum shows in the repertory a person whose fear accompanies the day and eases in the warm bed. Childhood with the discord of the parents appears to be the soil in which self-sufficiency, startling and the anxieties grow.
All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
