Mancinella venenata (Manc.)

Mancinella venenata (Manc.) appears in 242 rubrics in the repertory. Of these, 22 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 12 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis lies on Fear, which alone provides ten specific rubrics, on Thoughts, on Delusions, and on Ailments from fright and from domination. Together they yield the picture of a person who feels beset by moral and supernatural powers and seeks lightness in vain.

Fear of guilt and punishment

The fear concerns conscience and the beyond. Listed are fear of hell, of sins and of moral transgression, in addition an obsession with misfortune and the fear of being pursued by misfortune. The hour of fear is midnight. The rubrics on alien beings stand out: fear of extraterrestrials and of Martians, each as a single-remedy rubric. Fitting with this is the delusion of being possessed by evil powers.

Upbringing and fright

Two single-remedy rubrics link ailments with a strict religious upbringing, a long history of excessive parental domination, which is recorded twice, in the Children rubric and in the rubric on domination: "Domination - children, in - religious upbringing, strict". Likewise fright is connected with the world of cinema: "Ailments from - fright - motion pictures, after frightening". One can read in this the trace that an imprinted fear leaves behind.

Thoughts and mind

The thoughts are persistent and tormenting. Suicide and injury to one's own person occupy them in single-remedy rubrics, in the dark delusions and fears torment; a sudden vanishing of thoughts occurs. Homesickness in insanity and the fear of insanity after typhoid belong here. The counterpart is a longing for cheerfulness that expressly remains in vain: "Desires, wishes - full of desires - cheerful, would like to be - in vain".

Sensitivity and body

On the bodily side stand sensitivity to hammering and to the sawing of wood, a weak voice after typhoid, and impeded speech from constriction of the throat. The delusion of being so light that one could float stands opposed to the heaviness of the thoughts. Nymphomania during climacteric is recorded.

Summary

Mancinella appears as a remedy in which guilt, fear of punishment and imprinted terror dominate the person. The thoughts draw him into the dark, the longed-for lightness does not appear; what remains is a fine sensitivity to noise and impression.

All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
