Niccolum metallicum & carbonicum (Nicc.)

Niccolum metallicum & carbonicum (Nicc.) appears in the repertory in 182 rubrics. Of these, 17 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy appears, and 7 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis is on Contradiction, Delusions, Restlessness, Fear, and Anger. Together they give the picture of a person inclined to contradict in the evening, who also shows himself protective and helpful.

Contradiction in the evening

The contradiction is tied to the evening: inclination to contradict in the evening, obstinacy in the evening, and single-remedy rubrics stating that intolerance of contradiction diminishes in the evening. Quarrelsomeness with inclination to brawls is added.

Impulse and self-control

Self-control alternates with its loss, and composure is followed by irritability. A single-remedy rubric describes the impulse to wring someone's neck and break it. At the same time the repertory lists the desire to protect and anger at indifferent bystanders when help is needed. The person becomes irritable over wasted time.

Night restlessness and delusions

The restlessness increases at night: after 3 a.m. the person must walk about because the whole body feels bruised. Around midnight singing occurs. The delusions are varied: the feet would slip away, others appear stupid and fat, a serious illness is impending, and on hearing religious songs the person is separated from the world.

Summary

Nicc. shows evening contradiction, fluctuating self-control, need to protect, and nocturnal restlessness in a mind that is restless overall.

All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
