Nitricum acidum (Nit‑ac.)
Nitricum acidum (Nit‑ac.) appears in the repertory in 1,149 rubrics. Of these, 65 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy appears, and 83 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis is on the rubrics for Children, Anxiety, Delusions, Ailments from, and Fear, followed by Sadness, Weeping, and Sensitivity. The picture is that of an embittered, grudge-bearing, and dissatisfied person who complains constantly, rejects consolation and sympathy, lives in quarrels and lawsuits, and worries about his health.
Bitterness and grudge
The core lies in a long-held offense. The repertory lists hatred of persons who have offended, with apologies leaving him unmoved; a bitter feeling from slight offenses; and malicious for a long time after insults, a single-remedy rubric. The person feels easily offended, even if only imagined. Added are envy, greed, and hatred, blaming others, in a single-remedy rubric the physician or practitioner, sadness that blames others, and the small rubric: "Cheerful, gay – happy, never". Sympathy is lacking, as the single-remedy rubric "Empathy – lack of" shows; in children, by contrast, there is sympathy, but also bitterness. In the relationship to the mother there is hatred of the mother, likewise a single-remedy rubric.
Complaining and refusal of consolation
The person complains constantly. Listed are constant complaining, complaining with threats, grief with complaints, anger about everything, and anger at noise. Consolation and kind words are rejected when they concern the person's own misfortune. He talks about misfortune and does not admit an improvement of the complaints. The dissatisfaction relates to health, the impatience to the cure, for the practitioner is to cure him at once. The despair borders on rage with cursing and swearing, and the cursing comes in the evening, in the evening at home, and with discouragement. Weeping improves the discouragement and the dissatisfaction.
Quarrel and lawsuit
A distinct group links the mind with disputes. The person holds disputes with absent persons, is aggressive in speech, and becomes excited during debate and dispute. The delusion of being involved in a lawsuit is assigned to this remedy alone, as are the anxiety as if involved in a lawsuit or a quarrel and the fear of a lawsuit. To these fit the rubrics on perjury: deceitful, sly, commits perjury. At night, too, the aggression is directed outward; a small rubric describes sleepwalking in order to strike other sleepers out of revenge. An indication of harshness toward himself and others is the rubric "Ailments from – domination – children, in – parental domination, long history of excessive – harsh, rough upbringing".
Concern about health
Hypochondriasis and fear about the body are numerous. Listed are the delusion of an undiscovered and of an incurable disease, hypochondriasis with fear of death, the fear of hair falling out and its delusion, teeth falling out when clenching, and the fear of antidoting the homeopathic remedies. Fear of prolapse of the anus and of lack of sleep, of ascending, and anxiety when walking fast are also found here. The anxiety is directed at the heart: congestion of blood to the heart, anxiety in chest and heart, constriction in the region of the heart. Devastating anxiety and inconsolable anxiety are rubrics of their own, and on the loss of a friend there is agonizing anxiety, likewise in children.
Sensitivity and riding
The sensitivity shows toward pain, where even slight pains drive him beside himself; toward jarring, toward passing cars, men's voices, and noise. Improvement in a carriage is characteristic: mental symptoms improve when riding, driving in a car, and in a carriage, and dullness improves in a carriage. A peculiarity is the relation to a pain in the right lumbar region, which makes work impossible and aggravates laziness, sadness, irritability, and mental exertion. Added are abuse of mercury as a cause of complaints and excitement, and displacement of the uterus as a cause of aphasia and loss of speech.
Delusions and perception
The delusions are especially linked to images: one sees images that grow larger and smaller, run, move quickly, disappear and reappear, in the evening in bed, and further, ghosts in the frost. Dogs would attack and gnaw flesh and bones. The child is not his own. The person speaks irrationally or insanely and, in delirium, in a foreign language or of foreign countries. Art and creative talents stand beside nihilism.
Summary
In the repertory Nit‑ac. shows a person in whom an offense continues to act. Bitterness, hatred, grudge, complaining, cursing, and quarrel mark the picture; consolation is rejected, sympathy is lacking, health is a worry, and the cure is to come at once. Striking are the relation to lawsuits and perjury, the improvement in a moving carriage, and the images that move and vanish. The rubrics on harsh upbringing, on bitterness in children, and on hatred of the mother add a biographical side to the picture.
All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
