Olibanum sacrum (Olib‑sac.)

Olibanum sacrum (Olib‑sac.) appears in the repertory in 376 rubrics. Of these, 53 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy appears, and 43 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis is on Thoughts, Delusions, Love, and Religious affections. The picture emerges of a person who longs for love, purity, and meaning, perceives with an open consciousness, and in doing so easily loses the boundaries of the self.

Longing

The basic tone is desire. The rubrics list longing for love, for loved ones, for company, for nature, for travel to foreign countries, for peace, clarity, and salvation of the soul; only here stands "Love – longing for". Beside these stand parting, which is hard, imagined love for a person, and desire for seduction. The affection is also directed inward: the person embraces herself and takes responsibility for herself.

The sacred

The religious appears as a mood and not as a doctrine. A single-remedy rubric names the holy mood, "Mood – holy mood", others the feeling of purity of the heart, religious songs, and being occupied with religious thoughts. Images join them: the person is in a cathedral, she would be a nun and must go to a convent, she has the sensation of flying in church, "Delusions – flying, sensation of – church, in". Opposed to this is the kitschy, for even kitsch appears beautiful, and the soul feels beautiful.

Thoughts

The thoughts are the largest group, and nearly every single-remedy rubric gives them an object: funeral, birth, misery, drugs and addictions, God and trust in God, lovers in literature, human communication, the help of the community, the meaning of life. The release of blockages fits this. The intellect remains clear, even despite alcohol, and grasps connections easily, but alternates with weariness.

Body and boundary

Awareness is heightened, to the point of centering in one's own body: "Awareness – heightened – body, of – centered, feels in the body". The sensation of rejuvenation, eating without hunger, and a small rubric on becoming one with the universe belong here. In the opposite direction appear uncertainty of identity and of personal boundaries, the delusion of dissolving, and fear of losing self-control. A looking back on earlier drug experiences and travels, joy that turns into sadness, and heightened mental power followed by weakness show a movement that does not hold.

Summary

Where longing, devotion, and heightened perception come together, the demarcation becomes thin. The rubrics can be read as a sketch of a receptivity that opens the person without giving support.

All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
