Ozonum (Ozone)
Ozonum (Ozone) appears in 362 rubrics in the Repertory. Of these, 61 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy appears, and 20 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis lies on Delusions, Fear, Colors, Indifference, Despair and Euphoria. The picture is that of a person who alternates between elation and despair, experiences himself in a transparent envelope, reacts to embraces and noise with constriction, and at the same time wants to be one with everything.
Polarity of euphoria and despair
The mind swings between extremes. Euphoria alternates with despair, despair with euphoria, indifference with euphoria, sadness with confidence, and mental power is increased alternating with sadness and weeping. Euphoria occurs on an outing and after lunch. Despair comes in the morning on waking and can bring on a wish to die; the person wants to be comforted. A single-remedy rubric records weeping over a lack of feelings. Indifference occurs with fatigue or with a feeling of superiority.
Constriction and sensitiveness
A second theme is constriction. The remedy has an aversion to embraces because they make it feel constricted, and the delusion of being in a transparent bell or surrounded by a soft layer. It is sensitive to city noises and to the ringing of the telephone, regards people as unpredictable, and dislikes company. At the same time there is a feeling of becoming one with everything, and the person wants to embrace trees.
Body, the foreign, and loss
The delusions concern body and space. Parts of the body or the heart are missing, a muscle can be felt only as thin, the body is absent. Something foreign is inside the person, she is being tortured, someone stands behind her when climbing out of the cellar, and a black blanket of snow is seen. The country road is long, the car stands still although it is driving fast, and distances to the ground are misjudged when walking. Unusual is the rubric about the devil being connected with the person, with arrogance toward those who strive for purity, light and love.
Anxiety and fear
Anxiety occurs in the evening in bed with sadness and relates to the future. Recorded are fear of the dark with trembling of the hands and fear of the sound of a door in the dark. One fear concerns stool with dark stool and urine or with hemorrhoids; another, the fear of becoming like one's own father. Starting from sleep occurs as if something had been forgotten. One mistake concerns the red and green traffic light.
Colors, speech and voice
Colors play a role of their own: dreams are in beige, black and white, black is desired, and there is talking about colors. The person dominates others in conversation, wishes others ill, and is malicious without feelings of guilt. The voice is hoarse or nasal. Jealousy is directed at others receiving all the attention; indecision shows when shopping.
Summary
The picture of Ozonum is shaped by the tension between elation and despair, by constriction through closeness and noise, and by a transparent envelope that separates the person from the surroundings. The large number of single-remedy rubrics among the delusions and colors makes the remedy distinguishable. No king-pin symptom is identified in the available data.
All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
