Saccharum album (Sacch-a.)

Saccharum album (Sacch-a.) appears in 371 rubrics in the repertory. Twenty of them are single-remedy rubrics, listing only this remedy, and 23 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphases lie in irritability, children, malicious behavior, and speech, as well as restlessness, hurry, and busyness. The picture is that of a restless child longing for attention, whose moods depend on the enjoyment of sweets.

Children and Sweets

The rubric on children is the largest with 27 entries. Only this remedy knows maliciousness after chocolate and after sweets, quarreling of children after sweets, and restlessness after eating sweets. The sweet appears here as a trigger: what pleases the child also irritates it. Alongside stand nail-biting of the toenails, putting the fingers in the mouth at night, and sucking on objects in the mouth.

Desire for Closeness

The children desire to be cuddled and caressed and suffer from the delusion of being neglected. An adult counterpart is found in lack of self-confidence with the wish to be supported by family and friends, and in anxiety about loved ones. A picture of neediness arises, expressed in mischief and irritability.

Irritability and Hurry

The irritability follows the rhythm of the day: it lasts until breakfast, before and after it, it alternates with mildness and appears when the menses are suppressed. Associated with it is a hurry that appears when driving and under the pressure of urgent duties, and a busyness in the morning and afternoon. While driving the thoughts are also absent.

Speech and Thinking

Speech is difficult, yet at the same time convincing or held in high-flown phrases. Attention suffers when listening and at work, and dullness sets in during conversations. Against this stand a groundless cheerfulness and the tendency to joke about everything.

Summary

The repertory shows an irritable, driven person with a strong desire for attention, who becomes wound up from sweets and whose irritability fluctuates with the meal.
