Viola odorata (Viol-o.)
Viola odorata (Viol-o.) appears in 172 rubrics in the Repertory. Of these, 15 are single-remedy rubrics in which only this remedy is listed, and 7 are small rubrics with at most two other remedies. The emphasis lies on Imaginations, Activity, Sensitiveness and Thoughts, as well as Music. The picture is that of an active, easily impressed mind that is thrown off balance above all by the violin.
Music and the sound of the violin
The most striking group concerns the violin. Listed only here are sensitiveness to violin playing and to violin music, aversion to violin playing and irritability from violin playing. A reaction of such precision shows how finely the remedy responds to one particular sound. The voice is also affected, being described as "Voice – shrill – slow and soft".
Active mind
Mental activity appears in several forms: emotional, accompanied by weakness of memory and headache, or as desire for emotional activity. In perspiration the thoughts become clear and ideas abundant. The imaginations are exaggerated and lofty, capricious and changeable, and they vanish quickly. Children comprehend quickly. One who takes in so quickly and lets go so quickly is evidently dealing with a fullness that cannot be grasped; the single-remedy rubric "Thoughts – morbid – cannot prevent them" fits this.
Impressionability and pain
Women and girls are easily receptive to impressions and easily influenced. Fear is listed as painful fear, respiration is aggravated by pain, and hysteria appears in tuberculous patients. Beside these stand whistling with a deep, soft voice and frowning with contracted eyebrows.
Summary
Viola odorata presents itself as a receptive, irritable mind that quickly produces ideas and imaginations and is particularly troubled by the sound of the violin.
All rubrics of this remedy, the materia medica and the case work are in Rathmer’s Repertory.
